“Six years ago a relatively unknown DJ, “Danger Mouse,” gained international recognition when his mashup, The Grey Album, hit the Internet. The album pieced together vocals from Jay Z’s The Black Album and music from The Beatles’ The White Album. It was a good idea, but looking back, the result was just okay. His reworking of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” had a great, driving beat, but other songs like “Public Service Announcement” and “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” lost the power of the originals. That said, the project raised the profile of mashups, giving thousands of DJs and experimenters a way to reach a large audience with their work. If passed, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) now under consideration in Congress threatens to dampen this genre of music, which frequently skirts fair use law. Until then, it’s more popular than ever.”…..
